NFLPA selling "One Team For The Cure" shirts to raise money for cancer

One Team For The Cure shirts benefitting the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center in Washington, D.C. are now on sale online through One Team Shop, the NFLPA’s e-commerce store featuring officially licensed player merchandise of more than 1,800 NFL players.

As of today’s launch, 50 players who have been directly impacted by cancer or are passionate about raising awareness for the disease have committed to participating in the 2014 One Team For The Cure campaign, with all 32 NFL teams represented by at least one player.

“Cancer affects people from all walks of life. Professional athletes have unique opportunities to make a real difference by mobilizing public awareness of the importance of continued progress in cancer research and patient care,” said Louis M. Weiner, MD, director of Georgetown Lombardi. “The money raised by the sale of the One Team For The Cure shirts helps to achieve this incredibly important goal, and we thank the fans and the players who support the cause.”

The connection between the NFLPA and Georgetown Lombardi has grown, in part out of a shared connection to the legacy of legendary NFL coach Vince Lombardi, who was treated for cancer at Georgetown University Hospital before succumbing to the disease in 1970. Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center is named in his memory.

On the front of each shirt is the One Team For The Cure logo featuring a tri-colored ribbon: pink representing breast cancer awareness; light blue, prostate cancer awareness; and lavender for awareness of all cancers. The player’s last name and jersey number are located on the back. The Georgetown Lombardi logo is positioned just below the One Team For The Cure logo.

Georgetown Lombardi will use its portion of the shirt proceeds for cancer research and treatment.

“Finding a cure for cancer is a cause that is close to the hearts of our players and is personally very important to my family,” said NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith, who is also the honorary chair of the annual Georgetown Lombardi Gala. “It’s inspiring to see our players and their fans support the One Team For The Cure initiative and the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. Together we can continue to help families across the country to fight cancer.”

The shirts are available in men’s and women’s sizes through October (breast cancer awareness month) and November (prostate cancer awareness month).

“I’m proud to team up with other NFL players to participate in the One Team For The Cure campaign,” said Cincinnati Bengals defensive tackle Devon Still. “We all have been affected by cancer either directly or indirectly. From my personal experience with cancer through my daughter Leah I see how important it is that we come together and continue to raise awareness about the need for a cure and early detection.”

Shirts are on sale now at One Team Shop.
